As we continue our journey into technology and beyond, I hope you are starting to become one with the computer. I know, I know, that isn't true of everyone. . .but a tech teacher can dream, can't he?
This week: I want everyone to concentrate on finishing loose ends. . .Inspiration, writing the narrative for NETS-I. . .those pesky journals, etc. I have also posted the excel/spreadsheet assignment that will be your virtual assignment for next week. . .don't forget, I have to be out of town, so you will be working from the comfort of your own computer next week. . .
Journal 7 & 8: Again, I will give you freedom to find an article of your choosing, but if you having been thinking too much, I recommend two articles from L&L:
Envisioning the Future of Education, by Mark van't Hooft, and Making Field Trips Podtastic!, By Aliece M. Weller, John C. Bickar, and Paul McGuinness. Some of you may have already chosen one of these articles. . .in which case, you may wait until you receive the April issue of L&L!!
This week's question: What is more important to you, the skills you acquire in school or the grades? If this class were pass/fail, would you work just as hard? Explain.

I have always prided myself on getting good grades, however, I do feel that the skills acquired in a class are more important than the grades received. If this class were pass/fail I would still work just as hard if it were not. I always try to do my best, regardless of the circumstances.
I think that the skills that you acquire in school are more important then grades. Your grades give you a sort of momentary sense of success but the skills that you learn and the application of them end up being more important to you in the long run.
I think that the skills I get in school are more important to me than the grades themselves, although positive feedback is always nice. Getting feedback from teachers or professors in general is very important to me. If this class were pass/fail, I probably would work just as hard on the assignments, but I probably wouldn't try as hard as I do now to get them done on time!!! Getting things done on time without stressing has always been my biggest struggle in school
I will be honest that getting good grades has always been important to me. However, I think that the skills and information that you gain from the classes are more important. And since I have taken several pass/fail classes I have found that I work just as hard anyways.
I can't lie. I am always concerned with grades. Though, there are some classes that are more hands-on and are aimed at building skills. In some of these classes I will learn the skills enough to get a good grade. But there are other classes that also build skills that are helpful for other, future endeavors. For example, my literary theory classes were essential for developing different reading and analysis skills that would be necessary for me to be successful in other literature classes. The skills I learned in those literary theory classes were thus necessary for succeeding in subsequent classes. This is one of those classes that will be necessary for other classes in the future. I would definitely put in the same effort if this class was only pass/fail. It also helps because it is a topic I am interested in. I am more invested in the class because of it.
skills are definitely more important than grades. I would work just as hard if the class were pass/fail. The skills we are learning now will hopefully help us in our jobs as educators, the grades wont matter.
I think that the skills that you acquire in school are the most important. Mastering skills so that they will be usable in your career is important. Grading is how the professor sees your knowledge of the subject area according to their idea of mastery. Sometimes we see things differently and I think if the skills are usable you will become more efficient over time by using them in your career
Definitely the skills. What good is the letter "A" in the real world? It's the skills that are what truly matter once you enter the work force. The grades are just a means to an end (your degree). And yes, I would work just as hard if this class were a pass/fail because I believe you get what you put into the class. And I want to get all I can out of this class.
I don't like putting my name on things I am not entirely proud of, so i would still turn in quality work. However, if this were pass/fail I probably would slack a little more. I have a hard time staying ontime as it is, giving me more cushion is no bueno. As much as I hate earning poor marks, I love the satisfaction of getting an A. If this class were pass/fail, I might be over at National.
I guess the skills I acquire and the grade go together. If I get a good grade it is because I have mastered the skill. Grades have always been important to me and I would rather work for a grade than pass/fail. I would still work hard for a passing grade, but maybe not as hard as I would work for an "A".
I have been so brainwashed to think school is all about the grades, but actually in college when I took pass/fail classes I actually worked just as hard because it was more fun than worrying about grades. The skills that I acquire in class is more important to me than the grades I receive.
I believe they are equally important because without good grades you can't be successful in school.
While good grades are important, I definitely think the skills we acquire in class are of more importance. Like most everyone else I think I would do just as much work in this class if it were pass/fail. The main thing to me is leaving the class knowing as many new skills as I can, I care about grades but in the end I would rather have skills I can use for years to come.
Initially, I think that my grades are very important in my classes but overall the skills and knowledge that I learn are the most important. In some classes, the pace is much too rushed and I feel like I shortchange myself by just trying to get through the work. If classes were just a pass/fail I might explore on my own more depth about the topics.
What is most important to me is what I have learned in a class. I feel like grades are sometimes over rated and put too much pressure on learning. If this class were pass/fail I would still try hard because I feel that this class is a very beneficial class that offers a person skills that will only enhance their knowledge and technological advancements. I feel that this class especially could help me with teaching, so I would be a fool for not taking advantage of this opportunity.
The skills I acquire in school are more important than the grades. My parents repeated this to me many times when I was growing up. However, grades have also been important to me. I would like to think I would work as hard. I would probably struggle with getting things done on time because of all the other stresses of life.
The skills that I gain from the classes are the most important. However, I do not realize this in the short term. In the short term, your grade is most important because that is like your paycheck.
I've never taken a pass/fail class, but I know I definitely work for the skills not the grade. Acquiring and mastering a skill is exciting and engaging to me if it is taught well. In fact, if the skill is not taught clearly and presented thoroughly by the instructor, I've lost interest and settled for a C.
The skills I acquire in school are far more important to me than the grades, but I still enjoy getting good grades. If this class were pass fail, I would still work as hard as I am now. I enjoy learning and that is what drives me.
I believe both are important b/c that's what I tell my children. I have never been a grade focused as a student, but as a parent I am more so. I think understanding & comprehension are important part of any class. I past probably would lean towards not working as hard if it was pass/fail. Even now I wish I could spend more time on the computer for this class just fooling around with things.
Like many other students, I have always aimed for good grades, but I am fully aware that the skills that we acquire throughout our education are far more important than any grade that a teacher can give me! There have been times when I have taken classes to get that "easy A" but unfortunately when this is the case, it is difficult to gain information and knowledge from an easy A class, when things are simply "memorized" and not "learned", in order to get that good grade on the test. I would definitely still try my hardest in this class if it were pass/fail, because I know that the skills that I could acquire from this class could and would be very beneficial for me when I start the teaching credential program and when I have my own classroom someday in the near future :)
I am a hopeless over-acheiver, so I would work hard whether I were graded or not. I enjoy learning and encompassing new skills, and like Rym, I like that positive feedback.
I think for me, it really depends on the subject. If it is something that I can apply directly to my life, I think learning the skill is way more important than the grade. Skills that will affect the things I do in work or in other areas of life. But to be perfectly honest, some classes I have taken, I try harder for the grade than acquiring the knowledge. If it is pass/fail, I would probably put forth less effort unless, like I said above, it directly related to my life or future.
I think the skills aquired are the most important then grades. The skills we learn are what we use in the real world.
